Introduction
The 3rd Ringwood Rapidplay took place on Sunday 22nd June, 2025.
There were two late withdrawals, leaving 62 players in total, with 22 in the Open section and 40 in the Intermediate (under 1800) section.
The tournament was played over 6 rounds with a time limit of 15 minutes + 10 seconds. There were free drinks all day and food was provided at a modest cost, with vegetarian and vegan options available. Once again, the arbiter's chilli proved extremely popular.
The total prize fund was increased from the advertised £600 to £660 in order to cater as fairly as possible for joint winners of prizes.
We would like to thank Schofields Landscapes and Gardens for their continued sponsorship of the event.
We would also like to thank The Regency Chess Company for their donation of a chess set which was raffled at the tournament, with each competitor getting a free ticket. The set was won by Aaron Bell, pictured.
Prize Winners
Open Section
There was a four way tie for 1st place between Oscar Garcia, Ollie Stubbs, Roland Bezuidenhout and Allan Pleasants who all scored 4.5 points and won £50 each.
There were 3 people on 4 points who shared the U2000 and U1900 rating prizes, winning £20 each: Christian Westrap, Ivan Georgiev and James Forster.
The Junior prize was shared between Hugo Melling and Anuhas Gamage with 3 points, each winning £15.
Intermediate Section
There was also a tie for 1st place in this section, with between Niclas Hordnes, Simon Redmill and Richard Ursell who scored 5 points and won £70 each.
The Under 1700 prize of £25 was won by Phil Pinto on 4.5 points.
The Under 1600 prize of £25 was won by David Dowson on 4 points.
Mac Holland on 4 points was the top scoring junior and also qualified for the Under 1600 and U1500 rating prizes. Whilst the rules say a competitor can only win one prize, we felt it only fair to give Mac more than a single prize and awarded him £40. Unfortunately, Mac had a long journey home so was not at the prize giving.
Karla Venter and James Hawkes (both pictured below) and also Jadan Gerety were on 3 points shared the U1500 rating prize, winning £15 each.
Peter Nimmo did exceptionally well and scored 3.5 and won the Under 1400 rating prize of £25 outright.
Thanks
We would like to thank all those who took part and we hope you may enter again next year.
We would also like to thank all those who helped organise and run the event, not least for the effort in keeping players fed and watered throughout the day. A special thanks goes to those who are not Ringwood Chess Club members: Bridget Clancy and Nikki Forster for their hard work in the kitchen, James Forster and Christian Westrap for helping clear up at the end, and Martin Simons for acting as chief arbiter.
